The parisian identity through its ornamentation

Scope: Diploma 5 situate itself within the city of Haussmann’s Paris. I was personally interested to look at how the city form its identity through its ornamentation.

Lots has been said about the ornament and its relevance today. From Louis Sullivan (1892) to Adolf loos- ornament and crime (1908) to the function of ornament by farshid moussavi.

When ornament got to the stage its main purpose was beauty- it got rejected and today it being reconfigured or reinvented to have an added value.

The Hausmannian ornaments had a social class representation.The more complex the ornament was- the more manual labor needed and that was determining one’s social Class. Nowadays, the Parisian ornament doesn’t represent social class anymore and the City of Paris is on its search for a new identity- 

There is a need to create a new type of architecture with respect and despite the city’s memory.

The city was constructed as a facade project and housing project separately with no dialog between the inside and the outside. Shifting the focus from the social to the environmental, opens up possibilities to develop a facade that reacts to its direct surroundings. Therefore, I started exploring the idea of a singular panel and designing a catalog concentrating mainly on acoustics and light. This, resulting in a dual facade element acting on the inside and outside as a mediator between the two spaces.

The aim is to reinvent the “nostalgic” Haussmannian apartment building, by creating an active dialog between the Parisian architecture and its context.

Through this exercise I was testing the limits of Identity reconfiguration.

When does Paris stop look like Paris?

Scope‭: ‬The project aims to transfer agriculture into the city as a response to the global food crisis. It compresses 3 layers: Production, Sales and Distribution into 1 footprint in the city while creating in the site a hub or a node for a self sustainable community.

The envelope is the main focus of the project, questioning if we can use the envelope as a device to collect rainwater and energy while purifying the air pollution.

The panel/prototype is a result of different geometry experimentation for channelling rainwater. The envelope is constructed from 2 layers. The first- concrete envelope and the next is the fiberglass panel facade. The two layers idea is diverted from the air well case study- condensation capture. The perforation of the panel are generated for the humidity to penetrate and condensate on the concrete shell while its geometry is to channel the water into reservoir.

Scope‭: ‬The project takes inspiration from the expressway in Tokyo. Tokyo’s expressway is being built over the canal and other public spaces for fast constructions with no permissions. I was interested in testing this condition in London, Taking into considiration the unit’s agenda- “Addendum”.

What will be the consequences of an expressway going through the city? How does this collision between the expressway and the city gives an opportunity to redefine the borders between the private and public and how does it introduce new type of spaces in the city?

Year long project.

Scope: My first project was about a specific observation on the Barcelona pavilion. There are various reflections trough out the pavilion- water, steel, marble etc.

“... It must be noted, that if the vertical columns were accentuated by their stainless steel sheaths, the horizontal structure of the roof was played down to the point of giving the impression of being a homogeneous slab. In the space, open to diag- onal views and to movement, the only perceptible symmetry was that of the ceiling; There are certain photographs of the pavilion that can be seen upside down. Thus, symmetry was the course revealed only once one had stepped up onto the plinth..”

Scope‭: ‬The project aims to explore different spatial organization both seperate and combined, while looking at the program and the private and public thresholds which are represented as transparancy and colour.

The project tackle the ever‭ ‬increasing demand and the change in today's consumption culture by offering a new delivery infrastructure on a separate plane, infusing goods directly. Because of its highly automated nature, it is depicting a direct outcome of our current consuming organizations, technologies and values. Creating spaces of co-excistence between the hard and the soft infrastructure.

The project invision an urban landscape exclusively owned and operated by Amazon, Creating the skin of the future.The skin is not only providing protection, but also conveying information and becomes a visual interface between private and public, inside and outside which is creating a communication platform.

An architectural element capable of communicating the function and significance of a building.

Scope‭: ‬The terrace site is the only outdoor space within the AA that interacts both with the school whilst at the same time being visible to the street.

With this in mind, we decided to set ourselves a constraint that would maintain the site as predominantly terrace, with the studio as its addendum, thus the idea of 60/40.

Our studio occupies 40% of the terrace’s floor space, leaving the remaining 60 as an open terrace. In order to maintain this ratio, we created a two story studio that sits against the southern terrace wall.

We breached from the terrace into the AA, using the entrance corridoe as part of our studio space.

Winning proposal

Scope‭: ‬The terrace site is the only outdoor space within the AA that interacts both with the school whilst at the same time being visible to the street.

With this in mind, we decided to set ourselves a constraint that would maintain the site as predominantly terrace, with the studio as its addendum, thus the idea of 60/40.

As a design method I chose to compare the U section as an existing condition with the different material completion as a new condition. Examining how addition can enhance the exsiting condition in different ways. I chose to look into this issue further in my project.
